Abundant Wildlife Garden
This lovely couple were entering a new phase of their lives and wanted a garden that meant they could enjoy their coming retirement in a beautiful abundant flowering garden. The big height difference from their current deck to the garden meant that they felt cut off from the garden and would tend to just sit up there and not venture down. The couple also wanted to encourage wildlife in their garden …squirrels, bees, butterflies frogs all welcome!
The first thing I wanted to address was to make the access from the house to the new deck and down into the main body of the garden gentle and easy so that the client could easily navigate the level changes which can be difficult for her due to her MS diagnosis. Then by brining the planting up onto the deck in lovely built-in beds we were able to make the garden feel much more connected to the house. This garden’s aspect allows the clients can enjoy sun in the garden throughout the day. The top deck enjoys morning sun so we made space for a bistro table and chairs for morning coffee and breakfast outdoors. The next level includes a generous entertaining area. With big comfy built in seating complete with bespoke cushions. There is a gorgeous fire pit which helps to extend the season the garden can be enjoyed. To the more shady side is space for a BBQ with nearby herbs such as rosemary to be used with the delicious BBQ food.
Then two oval off set lawns that help to widen the space with planting layers in between and all the way around. Both keen gardeners the planting is full of flowers for pollinating insects, in soft pinks purples blues to give that traditional English country garden vibe. But mixed with ornamental grasses to give it a more contemporary spin with the onus on plants that need less water to fit in with our ever changing climate and meaning the clients have less work to do if they prefer. The various plants chosen, the little pond at the bottom of the garden all designed to encourage wildlife into the garden and make it feel alive with nature.
