“The garden looks fab all year round. We’ve ended up with such a peaceful, beautiful, little oasis. We’re absolutely thrilled.”

The Black Garden

A unique urban tropical garden that reflects the modern eclectic style of the young couple who live there.

My clients wanted a space that truly reflected who they are. They were excited to use innovative and different materials to keep costs down and give a refined overall look to their garden, which they wanted to feel lush and tropical.

The planting stretches across the space and encompasses the existing Fig and climber on the back wall to give a lush tropical feel. The bench near the back of the house gives them flexible seating to enjoy with or without a table. There is space for the BBQ and next to it a slatted wooden wall piece. They can use the slats to hang BBQ tools from, attach hanging planters to and grow the Passiflora cearulea (passionflower) plant up to soften the wall. The top terrace allows them to enjoy the last of the sun while giving Jenny her much loved sunny spot and Phil a chance to sit on the mid terrace in blessed shade. The small area of slate chippings is the perfect place for a fire pit for them to enjoy long into the autumn evenings.
